Wall Cladding & Panels

Are you ready to transform your walls? In this weeks segment, I will talk about wall cladding and panels. If you are bored with plain drywall finish, out dated wallpaper and want to add an element of decor, this product is for you!

What is Wall Cladding? (wood, metal, stone, PVC)

Cladding can be make of any wide range of materials that include wood, metal brick, vinyl and composite. Wall cladding can be used within Interior or Exterior applications and can be used for decorative purposes, wall partitions, sound absorption or adverse weather elements. Some of the best products that I found were from the following manufacturers in residential or commercial applications.

  • Armstrong (see link below for ideas, offerings & customization)
  • Walls-Decor
  • Brazilian Lumber

One of the most frequently used types of cladding is stone and metal products. Which are mainly use on the exterior as a facade that can give a luxurious appearance. The disadvantage is that with natural stone or ceramic cladding products the material can be quite heavy. Today on show, I am going to discuss products that relate to interiors, finishes that are derived from fabrics, wood or composite materials.

What Are Wall Panels? (decorative)

  •  Wood (geometric shapes, textures and patterns)
  • Fabric Blends
  • PVC or Composite Materials (ceiling panels or exterior faux wood - trex decking

Wall panels are a type of decorative covering used to shield the walls of a room. They come in various materials, including wood, metal, and plastic. Wood wall panels are particularly popular because they add warmth and texture to a room and are easy to install.

Benefits Of Wall Panels

1. Durability:

Wall panels are durable and long-lasting. They are made from high-quality materials and designed to withstand daily use’s wear and tear. Unlike paint or wallpaper, wall panels resist scratches, dents, and stains. This makes them an excellent choice for high-traffic areas such as the living room, kitchen, or hallway.

2. Easy Maintenance:

Wall panels are easy to clean and maintain. They require little upkeep and must not be repainted or replaced frequently. You only need a damp cloth and mild detergent to keep them looking their best.

3. Easy to Install:

The installation part of home improvement projects is often the main reason people delay such endeavors. Home redesigns can be laborious, prolonged, and expensive, especially if you hire professionals such as millworker that is skilled with molding or cabinets.

However, wall paneling is a different story. It is a great DIY project that is easy to install, making it an excellent option for those who are handy or eager to learn. The tongue-and-groove designs and clipping systems make wall panel installation easier than putting together some children’s toys.

Different Material Choices

While traditional wall paneling is wooden, there are other options than this material! Modern materials such as medium-density fiberboard and melamine are also durable and impact-resistant, making them suitable for high-traffic areas where scuffing and denting are likely to occur.

Wall Paneling Offers Protection for Your Walls:

Paneling is more than just decorative. It also serves a practical purpose by covering your walls from damage

Additionally, impact-resistant paneling is available for increased protection against accidental impacts. If your wall paneling shows signs of damage, replacing or cleaning a section of the paneling is easier than repairing drywall.

Design Choices For All

There are multiple ways to cover your walls with paneling. In the past, the type of wall paneling in residential and commercial buildings has adjusted to reflect society’s tastes and trends.

Use As Camouflage for Unaesthetic Features:

We can all have a slight dent or imperfection in the walls of the house that are annoying to the eye. Wall paneling is an ingenious and beautiful way to cover those flaws and add a decorative touch to your spaces.

But not only that. Wall panels can also be used to hide unaesthetic objects, such as cables, or to camouflage disused structures or bigger elements that are difficult to remove, such as an old fireplace.

Soundproofing and Insulation Function

If you are looking for a simple way to add more soundproofing and insulation to your home, wall paneling can also help. Adding this layer to your walls can help keep warm air in during the winter and cool air in during the summer. It also acts as an additional buffer to sounds from outside your home or between rooms so that you can enjoy a quieter environment.

Areas of Use for Wall Panels

1. Living Room or Hallway Niches:

The living room is one of the most common areas of the home where wall panels are used. They add texture and depth to the space and create a warm and inviting ambiance. Wood panels can be used to create a rustic or country-style decor, while metal panels can add a modern touch to the room. Also, wall panels in the living room can be practical for framing pictures while creating a beautiful visual style.

2. Bedroom - Media Room - Office:

Fabric wall paneling can really adding "pizzaz" to your bedroom, media room or office because of the sound absorption and the many options available colors, textures or patterns. I have use fabric wall paneling many times over in my design career for uses such as headboards, recording studios and themed media rooms. Fabric blends that I used ranged from faux suede materials to chenille's and vinyl metalic's. In a previous design project, I used a deep red crocodile texture print to line the walls of a circular cigar smoke room. It was absolutely stunning. It created a barrier between the other rooms of the home.

Wood wall panels are also an excellent choice for the bedroom. You can use them to create a focal point behind the bed, creating more saving spaces, or add texture and depth to the room. Wood panels also create a cozy and romantic ambiance, while metal panels can add a touch of elegance and sophistication.

3. Kitchen:

The kitchen can use wall panels to create a functional and decorative backsplash. They can be made from various materials, including wood, metal, and plastic. Wood panels can create a rustic or country-style kitchen, while metal panels can add a modern touch to the space. Partition separations from one room to the next works wonderfully in small spaces to create an area for solitude.

4. Bathroom:

The bathroom is another great area to showcase these type of wall panels or cladding. However, composite of pvc materials would be best suited for this area due to damp location of water.

Style Ideas On How To Add Wall Panels To Your Home

Textured wall panels are a great way to add a unique and distinctive touch to your home decor. They come in various materials, including wood, stone, and concrete, and are great for creating a focal point or adding texture and depth to a room.

4. Painted Panels for a Pop of Color (shiplap or natural knotty pine wood)

The touch of color your home needs! They come in various colors and can be used to create a focal point or add a splash of color to a room. Painted panels are the perfect way to add personality and style to your home.

6. Decorative Panels (Wall Decor Art)

Decorative wall panels are a great way to add art and design to your walls. They come in various patterns, designs, and materials. They can create a statement wall or add a decorative touch to a room. Some of my favorites are at Home Depot (Ekena). These wood wall panels are sized approximately 23" x 23" square and have an assortment of geometric shapes such as Arabesque, Squares, Octagon and more. They have a smooth surface that is easy to brush or spray on paint. (see the weblink below)

Mixing different materials is a great way to create creative and eclectic home decor. You can mix wood panels with metal panels or stone with concrete panels to create a unique and distinctive look. Mixed material panels are an excellent choice for homeowners who want to create a one-of-a-kind home decor that reflects their personality and style.
